Smudge & Sooty’s Playful Christmas – Pawfectly Purrfect Stockings

I made a couple of these last year for our furbabies, but as with absolutely everything I made last year, I had no time to create a tutorial for them. I’m being so, so good with time management this year and trying to get everything written up in advance. That way I can sit and sew to my hearts content with all the writing already complete.

What You’ll Need

Download and print the pattern below. Print two copies.

Cut two outer pieces, two lining pieces and two wadding pieces using the template provided. Note that I ran the scissors right to the top of the page instead of down the top line of the stocking. This gives it a little more length.
Cut a cuff piece of fabric measuring 12 x 4 inches.
Cut a hanging loop piece measuring 6 x 2 inches.

Cut out the paw pad pieces from the templates provided.

Cut a small amount of the cuff fabric and back it with fuse-a-web. The piece needs to be big enough for all 5 pieces of the paw pads. Mine was a bit bigger as I was making two at the same time.
Using the templates you cut out, draw around them on the back of the fabric (paper side).
Repeat the process with the letter you want to add to the stocking. I was originally making this for an adorable Labrador called Willow, but I put the letter the wrong way and now it’s for her mummy, Millie instead! Add Fuse-a-Web to a small amount of contrasting fabric and cut out your letter. Don’t worry, I’ve amended the instructions to be sure you put your letter on the correct way around.
Carefully remove the backing paper from the paw pad pieces and iron them onto one of the outer pieces of fabric.
Using a straight stitch, sew the pad pieces in place. You can of course use a satin stitch if you have the time… or indeed any stitch you’d normally use for applique.
Lay a piece of lining fabric on a flat surface. Then add a piece of wadding. Take both outer pieces and lay them right sides together. Add them to the stack. Top that with the other piece of wadding, then add the last lining piece on top.
Pin all layers together.
Sew around the stocking, leaving only the top open. Use a ¼ inch seam allowance. Then trim any excess. Clip the curves.
Turn the stocking right side out and set aside.
Create your hanging loop. Fold the 6 x 2 fabric in half with right sides together.
Sew across the end and down the side using a 1/4 inch allowance.
Trim as much excess as you can without going through your stitches. Pop a pencil into the end you sewed and push, pulling the fabric down. You want to turn the fabric right side out and this is the easiest way to do it 🙂
Press. Set aside.
Now for the cuff. Take your 12 x 4 piece of fabric and fold it in half along its shortest side.
Fold again.
Now open it up so you can see the fold lines. Take your letter and place it upside down in the bottom right corner. Place it as close to the long centre fold as possible. As you can see, I didn’t, and I regretted it at the end!
Remove the backing paper, and place the letter back in the point you did previously. Press. Then sew around the letter to keep it in place.
Fold the cuff back in half.
Sew together down the short side using a 1/4 inch seam allowance.
Fold the fabric right sides out and then fold in half as shown. You’re effectively pushing half the wrong side of fabric into the other half of the wrong side.
Place the hanging loop on the back seam of the stocking.
Then slide the cuff inside, being sure the folded edge is inside, and the raw edges are against the raw edges at the top of the stocking.
Sew using a 1/4 inch seam allowance being careful to catch front fabric, wadding and lining as you stitch around. When you get to the point where the loop is inserted stitch over that area a few times. Trim any excess.
Fold the cuff over and Voila! As I mentioned earlier, I should have placed the letter a little higher as it would have sat correctly. But… I’m sure Millie won’t mind! Now onto the next! We’ll also be adding a stuffed dog bone toy in the next few days, so keep an eye out for that.
