The first in the perfectly purple range, these little cutlery holders can be whipped up in no time. Just a quick note about the fabrics we used. Ours was made using left over jelly roll strips that had previously been sewn together and not used, hence the 4 different fabrics. We would however, suggest using two contrasting fabrics (a plain and a patterned). That being said, I love how these came out! Once you’ve made one, the steps will fall into place quickly, so any others you make can be made in next to no time!
What You’ll Need
Two pieces of contrasting fabric (amounts will depend on how many you plan to make)
Interfacing (Optional)
Ruler
Thread
Pins
Sewing Machine
Scissors or a Rotary cutter
Pinking Shears (Optional: Depends on how you want the edges to look)
First gather all the supplies listed above. The interfacing is optional but we found that the finished holder sits better on the table with the use of interfacing.
Either create a stencil to work from (baking paper works well), or cut each piece of your inner fabric to 4.5″ x 16″ and your outer fabric should be cut to 4.5″ x 17″. If using interfacing, cut this using the same measurements as the outer fabric and attach it using the instructions provided with the interfacing. We like the iron-on interfacing as it’s simply to use.Once cut, lay the inner fabric right side down and place your outer fabric on top facing up making sure that the fabric lines up nicely at one end.Pin the layers together so that they can’t move around. As you work, you may find you need to re-position the pins, but this will be obvious as we go through.Now turn the fabric over so you can see the overhang. Turn down the overhand by about half a centimeter and finger press it.Fold down again, this time by about an inch. This should create a straight edge to the fabric. Pin the folds in place and sew along the fold (about 1/4″ in) so that it remains stable.Now fetch your cutlery. It’s best to place the cutlery on the fabric to determine where you want the fold. Place the cutlery on the pouch and fold over the fabric (so the pocket is created). Once you have the perfect position for your needs, measure from the top of the fabric to the top of the fold and make a note of the measurement so that if you’re making more than one they’ll all be folded in the correct place. Pin the fabric on either side of the fold and remove the cutlery.Pin the remainder of both sides and then top sew both the left and right sides and across the top so that all the layers are sewn together.Almost there! If you want a straight edge, simply cut the left, right and top edges so they look neat. We decided to use pinking shears to give a decorative edge instead, but the choice is completely yours!Voila! Your very own handmade cutlery holders! And once you get the hang of it they can be whipped up in no time to suit your table colours for any occasion! We’ll add another image of these in use when we’ve created the rest of the Perfectly Purple table range, which will (hopefully!) include a table runner, coasters and place mats.
